Diplomats from the United States and Iran have scaled back their ambitions for a sweeping peace agreement, shifting focus toward negotiating a temporary memorandum of understanding. The primary goal of this interim accord is to prevent a renewed conflict and de-escalate current tensions.

Discussions are now centered on a limited set of practical steps that could be implemented relatively quickly. This more modest approach replaces earlier efforts to reach a comprehensive deal, with both sides aiming for tangible results that can keep diplomatic channels open.

A potential package of reciprocal measures is on the table. According to sources, this could involve humanitarian gestures and limited actions related to Iran's nuclear program in exchange for a partial easing of U.S. Economic pressure.

One specific point of discussion involves the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iran, which has faced years of crippling U.S. Sanctions, is reportedly seeking the unfreezing of some Iranian assets held abroad in return for allowing increased maritime traffic through the vital waterway.

Despite progress on some issues, significant disagreements remain unresolved. Core disputes persist over the fate of Iran's stockpiles of highly enriched uranium (HEU), which Washington wants removed from the country, and the duration of any suspension or freeze on Tehran's nuclear activities.

The context for these talks is the 2015 international nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, which restricted Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief. The agreement effectively collapsed after former U.S. President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew from it in 2018.

Should an interim understanding to halt hostilities be reached, sources indicate that parties would have a 60-day window to negotiate a final document with input from technical experts and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
