Four Russian citizens have been taken into custody on suspicion of orchestrating a major bank robbery in Kazakhstan, with the stolen amount estimated at approximately 2.6 billion tenge (around $4.6 million). The suspects are accused of breaking into a branch of Halyk Bank through a hole in the wall and making off with cash and valuables.

According to court documents from Russia, the theft amounted to roughly 400 million rubles. The charges formally allege that the crime was committed by an organized group and caused damage on an especially large scale. The incident reportedly affected 23 citizens of Kazakhstan.

The suspects were detained in January following a joint operation between Kazakhstani law enforcement from Pavlodar and their Russian counterparts.

However, the defense for one of the accused has strongly contested the allegations. Lawyer Anastasia Terekhova stated that her client and the other individuals have been implicated solely because they were present in the city of Pavlodar on the day of the robbery. She claims there is a lack of concrete evidence connecting them to the crime.

"My client, his acquaintance, and two other Russian citizens are accused only on the grounds that they were in Pavlodar that day," Terekhova asserted. "There are no other proofs; even a connection between these two pairs of Russian citizens has not been established."

Terekhova explained that her client and his friend were in Pavlodar to inspect vehicles with the intention of purchasing and reselling them in Russia, an activity she claims is unrelated to the bank heist.
