Turkish air defense systems, operating under the NATO umbrella, successfully intercepted and destroyed an Iranian-origin ballistic missile in Turkish airspace on Monday, March 9. The country's Ministry of Defense confirmed the incident.
The debris from the missile fell in a deserted area within Gaziantep province. According to official statements, there were no casualties or injuries resulting from the event.
In a firm declaration following the interception, the Turkish defense ministry stated that all necessary measures would be taken decisively and without hesitation against any threats directed at Turkish territory or its airspace. The statement also emphasized Turkey's commitment to good neighborly relations and regional stability.
The Presidential Communications Directorate of Turkey issued a subsequent call for restraint. Burhanettin Duran, head of the directorate, urged Iran specifically to avoid actions that could escalate regional tensions and endanger civilian populations. "It is extremely important that tensions in the region do not increase and conflicts do not spread to a wider area," Duran stated.
This is not an isolated incident. Just days earlier, on March 4, Turkey reported that a fragment from another Iranian ballistic missile had fallen in Hatay province. That event also resulted in no casualties.
Earlier on Monday, prior to Turkey's announcement, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei had asserted that Iran's armed forces had not carried out attacks against Cyprus, Turkey, or Azerbaijan.
