The construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan's Jizzakh Region, a project being developed in partnership with Russia, is set to save the country approximately 3.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas each year. This significant figure was highlighted in a report prepared by Deputy Presidential Advisor Rakhim Khakimov for the 34th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

The ambitious project is designed to meet up to 15% of Uzbekistan's domestic electricity demand, thereby diversifying the structure of the national energy balance. Preparatory work is already underway at the site in the Farish district, laying the groundwork for the crucial "first concrete" phase of construction.

In a landmark move, Russian state corporation Rosatom and Uzbekistan's Agency for Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers signed the world's first export contract for building a low-capacity nuclear power station based on a Russian design in 2024.

This was followed in 2025 by an additional agreement outlining key project implementation terms. The comprehensive plan involves constructing two high-capacity power units equipped with Generation 3+ VVER-1000 reactors and two more units featuring RITM-200N reactors, each with a capacity of 55 MW.

The realization of this nuclear power plant represents a major stride toward ensuring Uzbekistan's energy independence and increasing the share of carbon-free power generation within its grid.
