Kazakhstan to Modernize 11 Power Plants in Major Coal Generation Project

Kazakhstan has launched a major national project to modernize its coal-fired power generation. The initiative, which involves the technical re-equipment and modernization of 11 thermal power plants (TPPs), is a key priority for the country's Ministry of Energy.

The comprehensive program aims to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the nation's energy infrastructure. By upgrading these critical facilities, authorities seek to ensure a stable electricity supply and meet growing domestic demand.

The modernization plan will be implemented across several regions. Key cities slated for upgrades include Almaty, where the Almaty TPP-2 and Almaty TPP-3 will be refurbished. In the Karaganda region, work is planned for the Karaganda TPP-2, while in Ekibastuz, the Ekibastuz TPP-1 and Ekibastuz TPP-2 are on the list.

Other significant projects include modernizing the Petropavlovsk CHP-2 in the North Kazakhstan region, the Aktobe CHP in the Aktobe region, and the Shymkent CHP in southern Kazakhstan. The Zhambyl GRES in Taraz and facilities in Pavlodar and Semey are also included in this large-scale national effort.

This strategic move is part of a broader governmental focus on strengthening Kazakhstan's energy security. The upgrades are expected to extend the operational life of existing plants, improve their environmental performance, and integrate more advanced technologies into the national grid.
