Kazakhstan Launches Major Energy Overhaul: New Plants, Grid Modernization, and Nuclear Power
@TengriNews
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced the launch of a comprehensive modernization program for Kazakhstan's energy and utility infrastructure. The ambitious plan aims to secure the nation's energy sovereignty through the construction of new power plants, upgrades to existing facilities, and the development of nuclear energy.
The initiative includes immediate work on building three new thermal power plants (TPPs) in the cities of Kokshetau, Semey, and Ust-Kamenogorsk. Furthermore, new power stations based on combined-cycle gas turbine units are planned for the Turkestan and Kyzylorda regions.
Maintenance and repair work has either been completed or is scheduled at all 37 of the country's operational TPPs. The modernization drive for this year also encompasses over 440 electrical substations and more than 17,000 kilometers of power lines.
President Tokayev identified nuclear energy as a cornerstone for ensuring Kazakhstan's energy self-sufficiency and economic diversification. He emphasized that a strategic decision to build the country's first nuclear power plant was made by citizens in a 2024 referendum.
The head of state concluded that both peaceful nuclear energy and clean coal generation are pivotal sectors that will shape Kazakhstan's future energy independence.
