The Iranian Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed reports that the country's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, sustained an injury. A ministry representative stated that Khamenei is in good condition despite the wound.
Esmail Baghaei, a spokesperson for the ministry, provided the confirmation in an interview. He noted that while Mojtaba Khamenei was wounded, he is feeling well. Baghaei added that there is currently no information on when the leader will address the nation publicly.
The official also commented on the succession process, revealing that three or four individuals were considered for the position of Supreme Leader. The majority within the Assembly of Experts ultimately selected Mojtaba Khamenei.
Initial media reports suggested Khamenei was injured on February 28th, coinciding with the first day of attacks by the United States and Israel. The injury was believed to involve his legs, which sources cited as the reason for his absence from public view and heightened security measures.
Earlier, Yusef Pezeshkian, son and advisor to Iran's president, had asserted that Mojtaba Khamenei was alive. Pezeshkian claimed he verified this information through trusted contacts who confirmed the leader's health and well-being.
The context for these events is a military operation initiated by the US and Israel against Iran on February 28. Israeli officials stated the operation's goal was to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. The US issued threats to destroy Iran's naval fleet and defense industry while calling for citizens to overthrow the regime.
According to recent figures, the attacks have resulted in at least 1,300 casualties in Iran, including former Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. On March 9, following his father's death, Mojtaba Khamenei was named as the new Supreme Leader by the Assembly of Experts.
