Emergency services in Kazakhstan are on high alert as five regions face a significant threat of spring flooding. The Ministry of Emergency Situations has mobilized a substantial force to counter potential disasters.

The areas under threat include the Akmola, Karaganda, Abai, and North Kazakhstan regions, as well as the East Kazakhstan region. This assessment is based on expert analysis of current soil moisture levels, ground frost depth, precipitation forecasts, and the condition of local rivers.

To manage the situation, the Ministry has prepared a response group consisting of nearly 39,000 personnel and over 12,000 units of specialized equipment. Preparatory work is already underway, including stockpiling sandbags and fuel supplies and organizing snow removal from critical areas to mitigate runoff.

Early signs of flooding have already emerged in parts of the country. Several residential courtyards in the suburbs of Taraz have been inundated. In Shymkent, authorities are monitoring the swelling Badam River with concern.

Residents of the Atyrau region are also anxious following reports from Russia about increased water discharge from the Irtysh River's Iriklinskoye Reservoir upstream. Meanwhile, volatile weather in northern Kazakhstan—swinging from deep frosts to above-zero temperatures accompanied by snowfall—creates additional risks for rapid snowmelt and ice jams.
