A man and woman suspected of murdering an elderly couple in Kazakhstan's Atyrau region have been detained on the Indonesian island of Lombok. The suspects are the victims' daughter and her former husband.
Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sanzhar Adilov confirmed the arrests, stating that the individuals were detained yesterday. "The issue of their extradition is currently being resolved. The investigation is ongoing, and necessary examinations have been appointed," Adilov said.
The primary suspect, 29-year-old Sultan Sarsemaliyev, was apprehended by Kazakh law enforcement officers in cooperation with foreign colleagues in Senaru village on Lombok. He is suspected of committing a particularly serious crime—the murder of two or more persons under Part 2 of Article 99 of Kazakhstan's Criminal Code.
According to police information, Sarsemaliyev planned the crime in November 2025, allegedly motivated by greed and prolonged domestic conflicts. After committing the murders in the village of Zhangeldin, he reportedly buried the bodies under a farm building, attempted to conceal evidence, and took money and property belonging to the deceased.
His former wife—the daughter of the murdered couple—was detained alongside him. She had previously been reported missing and was declared wanted through an international search.
