The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan has issued a strong condemnation following an attack by Iranian drones on its territory, which resulted in damage to an airport terminal and injuries to civilians.
According to the ministry's statement, on the afternoon of March 5, drone attacks originating from the territory of the Islamic Republic of Iran targeted the Nakhchevan Autonomous Republic. One unmanned aerial vehicle struck the terminal building of Nakhchivan Airport, while another crashed near a school building in the village of Shakerabad.
The Azerbaijani government stated that these actions constitute a clear violation of international law and contribute to heightened regional tensions. The attack damaged airport infrastructure and wounded two civilians.
The Foreign Ministry demanded that Iran provide an immediate and clear explanation for the incident, conduct a thorough investigation, and take urgent measures to prevent similar attacks in the future. The statement emphasized that Azerbaijan reserves the right to take appropriate retaliatory measures in response.
In a diplomatic escalation following the incident, Iran's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Azerbaijan, Mojtaba Demirchioglu, has been summoned to the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry. A decisive protest will be lodged with the Iranian side, accompanied by a formal diplomatic note.
