Zelenskyy Urges Russia to Cease Fire, Citing Middle East Truce as Model

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Moscow to implement a ceasefire, drawing a parallel with recent diplomatic efforts that led to a truce in the Middle East.
In a public statement, Zelenskyy argued that a cessation of hostilities always creates more space for diplomacy and should precede a genuine end to any war. "Ukraine has always approached this war—Russia's war against Ukraine—from the same position," he stated.
The president acknowledged that implementing such a proposal would be difficult but emphasized that the ultimate goal for everyone should be the same: increased security.
Zelenskyy also connected the Middle Eastern situation to economic pressure on Russia. He suggested that if the Strait of Hormuz is successfully unblocked—a global necessity—Russia's oil revenues should continue to decline. "Oil fuels Russia's war and gives it courage," Zelenskyy wrote, adding that this is why Russia has invested heavily in supporting the Iranian regime and sought to prolong the conflict.
He argued there is no longer any basis for easing sanctions pressure on Moscow, which was previously presented as necessary for stabilizing the world oil market.
The referenced truce in the Middle East is currently under strain. Iran has stated it will exit the ceasefire regime if Israel does not stop bombarding Lebanon and Iran. A White House spokesperson clarified earlier that the US-Iran ceasefire agreement does not extend to Israeli strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon.
