Iranian officials have informed international mediators that they view recent US proposals for peace talks with deep suspicion, citing two previous instances of deception by the Trump administration. Tehran's distrust is compounded by the simultaneous US military buildup in the Middle East.

According to diplomatic sources, Iran has relayed a clear message to mediating nations—Pakistan, Egypt, and Turkey—stating that President Trump has "deceived us twice before, and we do not want to be deceived again." The officials pointed to recent American troop movements and the decision to deploy significant reinforcements as evidence that the offer for dialogue might be a ruse.

The United States is pushing for face-to-face negotiations with Iran in Islamabad as early as Thursday. However, the Pentagon continues to bolster its forces in the region. The White House has attempted to signal serious intent to Tehran, even suggesting the potential participation of Vice President JD Vance in talks due to his high-ranking position and perceived status in Iran as not a hardliner.

Advisors to President Trump have defended the strategy, arguing that demonstrating military strength is intended to create leverage for negotiating "from a position of power" rather than indicating bad faith. One advisor characterized the approach starkly: "Trump has one hand open for a deal and the other a fist ready to punch you in the damn face."

Previously, President Trump claimed that negotiations with Iran were "already underway" and that the US had "won this war," dealing with what he called "the right people" in Tehran. Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirmed Islamabad's readiness to host US-Iran talks.

Despite diplomatic efforts, sources indicate that combat operations could continue for another two to three weeks even if talks commence. The Pentagon's orders to CENTCOM regarding operations and planning remain unchanged by the current push for dialogue. Additional reinforcements, including several fighter squadrons and thousands of troops, are expected to arrive in the Middle East in the coming days and weeks.

The Iranian stance is rooted in recent history. During two prior rounds of US-Iranian contacts under Trump, Washington approved surprise attacks while publicly expressing a desire for agreement. Last June, Israel—with Trump's support—struck Iran just days before a planned round of nuclear talks. More recently, a preliminary agreement for continued dialogue was reached in Geneva between the US and Israel three weeks ago; a new strike followed just two days later.
