In a strategic move to integrate artificial intelligence into the nation's scientific infrastructure, Kazakhstan has inaugurated the Kazakh-Korean AI SilkNet Center in Almaty. The launch coincides with the strategic session "Foresight of Science and Technology in Kazakhstan: From Data to Solutions," where Vice Minister of Digital Development and Artificial Intelligence Dmitry Mun outlined the ministry's role in advancing national science through predictive analytics.
The event gathered over 400 participants, including scientists, government officials, industry representatives, and academics. Discussions focused on developing a national foresight research system, establishing a unified predictive framework for the country and its regions, and enhancing collaboration between the Academy of Sciences and local administrations to identify priority areas for scientific development.
The centerpiece of the session was the official opening of AI SilkNet. This initiative is a joint project between Kazakhstan's National Academy of Sciences and South Korea's Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), whose president, Dr. Sik Lee, attended the ceremony. AI SilkNet is positioned as Kazakhstan's first national platform for predictive analytics and scientific-technological foresight.
Vice Minister Mun emphasized the platform's transformative potential. "Foresight in science and technology is a tool for strategic management," he stated. "This national AI platform allows us to analyze vast amounts of scientific data, identify global technological trends, conduct patent and publication analytics, develop predictive scenarios for various industries, and create specialized AI agents for scientific tasks."
The platform will empower the Academy to develop its own AI agents, accelerate the preparation of strategic reports, and establish a system for monitoring global technological shifts.
"Historically, science has defined the developmental trajectory of nations," Mun added. "Today, our national science gains an opportunity to strengthen its position through AI infrastructure. This is a step toward forming the country's intellectual sovereignty and a new chapter in Kazakhstan's scientific history."
KISTI is South Korea's leading institute for scientific information and forecasting, specializing in applying AI and high-performance computing to research & development. The establishment of AI SilkNet opens avenues for transferring advanced international practices into Kazakhstan's scientific system and deepening strategic partnership with Korea in AI innovation.
