Central Asian Nations Hold Emergency Talks on Afghanistan in Astana

An extraordinary meeting of the Regional Contact Group of Special Representatives of Central Asian Countries on Afghanistan was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan in Astana on February 16, 2026.

Representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan participated in the consultations. The discussions focused on the current situation in Afghanistan and avenues for practical cooperation with Kabul.

Yerkin Tukumov, the Special Representative of the President of Kazakhstan for Afghanistan, emphasized Kazakhstan's interest in a constructive exchange of views and finding practical solutions to pressing issues concerning interaction with Afghanistan.

The parties examined several key areas for collaboration. These included developing trade and economic ties, expanding transit and transport corridors through Afghan territory, and addressing matters related to regional security.

Participants highlighted the critical importance of coordinating efforts among Central Asian states to promote stability and sustainable development within Afghanistan.

Following the meeting, a commitment was reaffirmed to continue regular consultations and maintain working contacts through the framework of the Regional Contact Group.
