Kazakh FM Meets UN Agency Heads, Outlines Constitutional Reform and Regional Initiatives

Almaty, February 14, 2026 – Kazakhstan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yermek Kosherbayev, held a meeting with the heads of United Nations agencies represented in the country.
In his address, the head of the foreign policy department reaffirmed Kazakhstan's unwavering commitment to the UN Charter and its central role in maintaining international peace, security, and sustainable development.
The Minister elaborated on key aspects of the ongoing constitutional reform aimed at strengthening the rule of law. "The reform is systemic and long-term in nature. It is directed at institutional transformation, strengthening the supremacy of law, enhancing political stability, and expanding citizens' rights and freedoms," noted Y. Kosherbayev.
He emphasized that the final decision on the proposed amendments to the Basic Law will be made following a nationwide referendum scheduled for March 15.
During the meeting, participants discussed priority areas within the Framework Document for Cooperation on Sustainable Development for 2026–2030. Plans from the UN Country Team for the upcoming period and proposals for further expanding cooperation were presented.
Special attention was given to developing the UN Regional Centre for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) for Central Asia and Afghanistan in Almaty. "The Centre is Kazakhstan's practical contribution to strengthening the Organization's field presence and promoting multilateral interaction in the region," stressed Y. Kosherbayev.
The Minister thanked UN agencies for their active participation in preparing for this year's Regional Environmental Summit on April 22-24. He also informed about plans to launch international consultations on President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev's initiative to establish an International Water Organization within the UN system during this event.
In light of Kazakhstan's digital transformation, participants highlighted the significance of an initiative to establish an Asia-Pacific Centre for Digital Solutions for Sustainable Development under UN ESCAP auspices in Almaty.
The meeting concluded with a confirmation of mutual interest in deepening practical cooperation, coordinating efforts, and advancing joint initiatives in support of sustainable development both nationally and regionally.
