A major modernization program is underway at the Altynkol–Khorgos railway and border crossing complex, a critical link in Kazakhstan's international transport corridor. The project aims to significantly boost the country's transit potential.

The Altynkol station and Khorgos border crossing form a single integrated hub, handling substantial volumes of export-import and transit cargo. The infrastructure facilitates efficient cargo processing, container transshipment, and coordination between the railway services of neighboring states.

The current upgrade focuses on expanding capacity along the Altynkol–Zhetygen section. Construction is in progress to add second tracks across two sections totaling 32 kilometers in length. Additionally, five new passing sidings are being built, and eight existing ones are being developed.

These comprehensive improvements are designed to increase the line's throughput from 18 to 33 train pairs per day. Completion of all work is scheduled for 2026.

During a recent working trip, Nurzhan Kelbuganov, Chairman of the Committee for Railway and Water Transport under the Ministry of Transport of Kazakhstan, inspected the progress of the projects at the station site.

The successful implementation of this modernization is expected to strengthen Kazakhstan's strategic role as a transit bridge between Europe and Asia and enhance the overall efficiency of the national transport and logistics system.
