The United States and Venezuela's interim authorities have reached an agreement to restore diplomatic and consular relations, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State.

The statement emphasized that the primary focus is on creating conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government. "This step will advance our joint efforts to ensure stability, support economic recovery, and promote political reconciliation in Venezuela," the State Department said.

"Our work is focused on assisting the Venezuelan people in moving forward through a phased process that will create the conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government," the statement added.

This development follows several months of heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas, which culminated in the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro in January. Subsequently, a series of changes unfolded in Venezuela, including the swearing-in of Delcy Rodriguez as the country's interim president.

Since those events, relations between the two nations have been gradually improving.
