The United States and Venezuela's interim authorities have reached an agreement to fully restore diplomatic and consular relations, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of State.
The statement emphasized that the primary focus of this move is on creating conditions for a peaceful transition to a democratically elected government in Venezuela.
"This step will advance our shared efforts to ensure stability, support economic recovery, and promote political reconciliation in Venezuela," the State Department said.
It further clarified that the work is centered on assisting the Venezuelan people through a phased process designed to establish the necessary conditions for such a peaceful political transition.
This diplomatic breakthrough follows several months of heightened tensions between Washington and Caracas, which culminated in January with the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
A series of subsequent changes unfolded in Venezuela, including the swearing-in of Delcy Rodriguez as the country's interim president. Since those events, both nations have been gradually working to mend their bilateral ties.
