A ballistic missile launched from Iranian territory was intercepted over Turkey, according to an official statement from the Turkish Ministry of Defense. The projectile, which traversed the airspace of Iraq and Syria en route to Turkey, was detected and successfully destroyed by NATO air and missile defense systems deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean.
Debris from the interceptor missile used to destroy the ballistic target fell in the Dörtyol district of Hatay province. No casualties or injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
This event occurs against a backdrop of escalating regional tensions. On February 28, the United States and Israel initiated a large-scale military operation against Iran. Israeli officials stated the goal of the strikes is to prevent Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons. U.S. President Donald Trump declared an intent to destroy Iran's navy and defense industry, while also calling for citizens to overthrow the regime.
In response, Iran has launched attacks targeting Israeli territory and American bases in the Middle East. Media reports indicate that missiles have struck not only military sites but also civilian infrastructure both within Iran and in other regional countries.
The conflict intensified further with reports confirming the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on March 1. Meanwhile, U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal suggested a potential American ground operation in Iran following closed-door briefings for lawmakers.
