Trump Tells Zelensky He Wants to End War Within a Month

In a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed his desire to see the war with Russia concluded as soon as possible, ideally within a month. The half-hour conversation, the first since the two leaders met in Davos in late January, was described by sources as friendly and positive.

President Trump reportedly told President Zelensky that he wants to achieve a peace agreement by this summer, stating the conflict has already lasted too long. Zelensky responded by expressing hope for an end to the war this year and thanked Trump for all the assistance provided so far.

The call took place ahead of a meeting in Geneva between Trump's envoys, Jared Kushner and Steve Witkof, and Zelensky's negotiating team. A Russian negotiator, Kirill Dmitriev, may also travel to Geneva for separate talks with the American representatives.

One of the key topics discussed was the possibility of a three-leader summit involving Trump, Zelensky, and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Last week, Zelensky suggested that remaining territorial disputes could be resolved through direct negotiations at this highest level.

Trump indicated he would work on organizing such a trilateral summit if progress is made at the next meeting of U.S., Russian, and Ukrainian representatives scheduled for early March. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that Putin would only meet with Zelensky to finalize an already agreed-upon peace deal.

According to sources familiar with the conversation, Trump reaffirmed his readiness to provide Ukraine with significant U.S. Security guarantees as part of any potential peace agreement with Russia.

Serious disagreements persist between Ukraine and Russia, particularly regarding territorial control in eastern Ukraine. The diplomatic push comes amid heightened tensions following recent strikes on a Russian oil terminal in Novorossiysk.
