Amid escalating tensions between the United States and its European allies, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has made a fresh attempt to prevent a major rift. Following a meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump, Rutte acknowledged that Trump is "clearly disappointed" with the military alliance.

Trump himself took to social media after the encounter, reiterating his long-standing criticism of NATO. "NATO was not with us when we needed them, and they won't be if we need them again. Remember Greenland, that huge, poorly managed piece of ice," he wrote in a post.

The former president's skepticism is not new. Last week, he told reporters he was "reconsidering" America's role within the alliance. In previous statements, Trump has labeled NATO a "paper tiger," claiming that Russia is "not afraid of NATO."

The current friction is partly rooted in recent operational disagreements. A number of NATO member states reportedly refused to allow U.S. Aircraft involved in potential operations against Iran to use their bases or to deploy ships to the Strait of Hormuz.

While analysts note that Trump cannot formally withdraw the U.S. From NATO without a two-thirds Senate vote or an act of Congress, there are other avenues for reducing American commitments. These could include slashing U.S. Funding for NATO operations, drawing down American troop levels in Europe, or even halting intelligence sharing with Ukraine amid its war with Russia.
