Israel Seeks Clarification After Trump's Surprising Lebanon Strike Ban
@TengriNews
Israeli officials have requested urgent clarification from the White House following a social media post by former U.S. President Donald Trump declaring that Israel is prohibited from conducting airstrikes on Lebanon. The statement reportedly left Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his advisors stunned.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Netanyahu and his team learned of Trump's comments through media reports and were caught completely off guard. They were described as personally shocked and alarmed by the declaration.
The Israeli government's surprise stems from the belief that Trump's statement directly contradicts the text of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon, which was published by the U.S. State Department just one day prior, on Thursday.
That previously announced agreement outlined a 10-day cessation of hostilities, which the United States had been working to broker for several days alongside parallel negotiations for a peace deal with Iran. A key provision of the published ceasefire text stated that Israel retains the right to military action, including during the truce period, for self-defense against planned, imminent, or ongoing attacks.
In return, Israel committed to refraining from offensive military operations against targets in Lebanon, including civilian, military, and other state facilities. However, Trump's Friday post employed much stronger language, asserting "Israel will no longer be bombing Lebanon. The United States has prohibited it. Enough means enough."
The discrepancy between the published agreement's terms and Trump's unequivocal public ban has created significant confusion and concern within the Israeli leadership regarding their operational parameters and the United States' official position.
