Trump Threatens Unprecedented Strikes on Iran if Deal Breached

Former US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening "more massive, more successful, and more powerful" military strikes than ever seen before if Tehran fails to fully implement a recent agreement. In a post on Truth Social on Thursday, April 9th, Trump stated that the US would act should Iran not honor the "real agreement reached" and ensure open and safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump emphasized that all American ships, aircraft, military personnel, and additional ammunition and weaponry deemed necessary would remain positioned in and around Iran until Tehran fulfills its commitments. These commitments specifically include preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and guaranteeing unimpeded transit through the critical waterway.

The warning comes amid separate international calls to extend a ceasefire. Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell urged on April 9th that the two-week truce brokered between the US and Iran also be applied to Lebanon. According to Lebanon's health ministry, Israeli attacks there since early March have resulted in 1,500 deaths and over 1,000 injuries.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares accused Israel of violating international law norms and the regional ceasefire with its airstrikes. UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper labeled Israel's bombardments in Lebanon as "extremely harmful." UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the strikes as "massive attacks" that killed and wounded hundreds of civilians, including children, while damaging civilian infrastructure.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian previously stated that Israeli strikes on Lebanon violate the ceasefire agreement and render negotiations meaningless, vowing that Tehran would not abandon the Lebanese people.

The US-Iran ceasefire was agreed upon in the early hours of April 8th, less than an hour before the expiry of a Trump ultimatum promising to "destroy" the Islamic Republic. Trump hailed the deal as a "complete and absolute victory" for America. Conversely, Tehran portrayed it as its own triumph. A statement from Iran's Supreme National Security Council declared: "The enemy suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat in its cowardly, illegal, and criminal war against the Iranian nation."

While the White House indicated Israel had also joined the truce, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that it does not extend to Lebanon.
