Former US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, threatening military strikes of unprecedented scale if Tehran fails to uphold a recent agreement and ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. In a post on Truth Social on April 9, Trump stated that the Pentagon would carry out attacks "more massive, more successful, and more powerful than anyone has ever seen."

The warning hinges on Iran's full compliance with what Trump termed a "real agreement reached," which includes preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and guaranteeing open and secure transit through the critical waterway. Trump declared that all American ships, aircraft, military personnel, and necessary munitions would remain positioned in and around Iran until these terms are met.

This threat follows a two-week ceasefire agreement between the US and Iran, brokered just hours before a Trump ultimatum expired. The former president hailed the deal as a "complete and absolute victory" for the United States. Conversely, Iranian officials portrayed the truce as their own triumph, with the country's Supreme National Security Council stating that "the enemy suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat in its cowardly, illegal, and criminal war against the Iranian nation."

Meanwhile, international attention has shifted to Lebanon. Spain, Britain, France, and EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell called on April 9 for the US-Iran ceasefire to be extended to cover Lebanon. They cited Israeli attacks there that have reportedly killed 1,500 people and wounded over 1,000 since early March.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares accused Israel of violating international law with its air strikes. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper labeled Israel's bombardments in Lebanon as "extremely harmful." UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the strikes as "massive attacks" resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian condemned the Israeli strikes in Lebanon as a violation of the ceasefire that renders further negotiations meaningless. He affirmed Tehran's support for the Lebanese people.

The White House indicated that Israel had also joined the broader truce. However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified that this ceasefire does not apply to operations in Lebanon.
