Former U.S. President Donald Trump announced plans for a new, universal 10% tariff on all imports, a declaration made on February 20th, the same day the Supreme Court ruled his previous sweeping tariffs unlawful.

The Court found that in 2025, the then-president exceeded his authority by unilaterally imposing trade barriers against a number of countries. The justices stated that the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, cited by Trump, applies only to genuine national security threats and that broad tariffs require Congressional approval.

Trump sharply criticized the ruling, claiming the justices were "under the influence of foreign interests." He insisted that the tariffs, which he links to national security, would remain in effect.

In April 2025, Trump had announced trade barriers against 180 countries and territories. Following a three-month negotiation period with a temporary 10% rate, the order took full effect in August. The final tariffs ranged from 10% to 41% and impacted 69 nations.

The former president also stated his intention to initiate several new investigations, the details of which have not yet been disclosed.
