Trump Labels NATO a 'Paper Tiger,' Accuses Allies of Cowardice

Former U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on NATO allies, branding the military alliance a "paper tiger" and accusing member states of cowardice. The criticism was posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, on Friday, March 20.
"Without the USA, NATO is a paper tiger!" Trump wrote. "They didn't want to join the fight against nuclear Iran. Now that fight has been won militarily, and there is almost no danger for them, but they complain about the high oil prices they have to pay and yet don't want to help open the Strait of Hormuz—a simple military operation that is the sole reason for high oil prices."
He characterized the proposed operation to secure the vital shipping lane as straightforward and low-risk for other nations. Trump concluded his post with a blunt accusation: "Cowards, and we will remember this!"
Earlier in the week, Trump stated that the United States had been notified by most NATO allies of their refusal to participate in any military action against Iran in the Middle East. He claimed this position did not surprise him, as he has long viewed NATO as a "one-way street."
"Without the USA, NATO is a paper tiger!... Cowards, and we will remember this!"
The former president argued that America spends hundreds of billions annually defending these nations while receiving little in return. With the U.S. Having achieved military success against Iran independently, Trump suggested American reliance on NATO assistance has diminished.
In a subsequent development, several nations—including the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Japan, and Canada—issued a joint statement expressing readiness to ensure safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz. The statement was published on the British government's website but did not specify concrete measures for restoring navigation through the strait.
NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that alliance members are engaged in discussions with Washington regarding potential solutions to unblock the strategic waterway.
