Tokayev Backs Trump's UN Criticism, Cites Security Council Dysfunction
@TengriNews
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has expressed agreement with former US President Donald Trump's critique of the United Nations, identifying the dysfunction of the Security Council as the organization's core problem.
Speaking at a panel session of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, Tokayev stated that it appears "quite strange and perhaps even absurd" that the very body designed to ensure security is obstructing solutions to critical international issues. He noted that diplomats and politicians are consequently forced to conduct negotiations on other platforms.
The Kazakh leader specifically referenced Trump's address to the UN General Assembly in September of last year. "He quite eloquently touched on this problem, and I fully agree with him," Tokayev said. He recalled Trump criticizing non-functioning equipment like teleprompters and escalators at UN headquarters as symbolic of broader breakdowns.
"The most serious problem," Tokayev emphasized, "is that the entire peacekeeping process is disrupted both in the United Nations and in other structures."
Despite this sharp criticism of the current system, President Tokay reaffirmed his staunch belief in multilateral diplomacy. He expressed continued faith in a bright future for humanity united around the idea of justice as a central element for strengthening peace.
This stance aligns with Tokayev's previous calls for UN reform, particularly of the Security Council. He has warned of growing global tensions and the diminishing role of the UN in conflict resolution, advocating for strengthened preventive diplomacy to avert international crises.
