President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan will host a series of high-level diplomatic and environmental events in Astana this week. The agenda includes a state visit from Mongolia's leader and a major United Nations-backed regional summit.
From April 20 to 23, Mongolian President Ukhnaagiin Khurelsukh will be in Kazakhstan on a state visit at Tokayev's invitation. The two leaders are scheduled to hold talks focused on strengthening bilateral relations across multiple sectors. Key discussion points will include political ties, trade and economic cooperation, as well as cultural and humanitarian exchanges between the two nations.
Concurrently, Astana will host the Regional Environmental Summit from April 22 to 24. This new dialogue platform, established under UN auspices, aims to create a shared vision for sustainable development in Central Asia. Its primary goal is to formulate joint solutions to pressing climate and ecological challenges facing the region.
The summit is expected to draw participation from heads of state and government of several countries, along with leaders of major international organizations. A significant meeting of the Council of Heads of State-Founders of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea is also slated for April 22, with President Tokayev presiding.
This flurry of diplomatic activity follows President Tokayev's recent working visit to Turkey on April 17. During that trip, made at the invitation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Tokayev participated in the opening of the Antalya Diplomatic Forum, delivered a speech at a panel session, and held several bilateral meetings.
