President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has addressed international criticism regarding the relatively short timeframe for preparing Kazakhstan's new Constitution. The comments came during a briefing with media representatives following the nationwide referendum on the constitutional project.

Responding to a question about international observers' remarks on the swift preparation process, President Tokayev clarified that the work on constitutional reform had been ongoing for a considerable period. He emphasized that while amendments were made to the Constitution in 2022, the decision was made at that time not to adopt an entirely new document, allowing for more comprehensive development.

"The idea to adopt a new Constitution was born then," Tokayev stated. "I started working on it approximately two years ago. I believed our country needed a new Constitution."

The President positioned the new document as foundational for a progressive and secular Kazakhstan. "I am confident this is the Constitution of a progressive Kazakhstan," he said. "We must work proactively, keep pace with progress, and not fall behind."

Tokayev argued that maintaining the nation's progressive character is crucial for its international standing. "First and foremost, if we are not a progressive country, we will lose authority in the eyes of foreign states," he explained. "Therefore, we must take our destiny into our own hands and work diligently for the good of the country. This is the most important goal before us."

The President's statements come after he cast his vote in the republican referendum on adopting the new Constitution.
