The Assembly of Experts of Iran has confirmed that Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has been elected as the third Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic.
"At today's session, based on the unanimous decision of the esteemed representatives of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Seyed Mojtaba Khamenei will be presented as the Supreme Leader of Iran," stated an official announcement from the council.
The decision follows a period of national mourning. The former leader, Ali Khamenei, was killed on February 28th during a joint US-Israeli military operation. A 40-day mourning period was declared across the country in response to his death.
Prior to the official confirmation, a member of the Assembly of Experts, Ayatollah Hosseini Eshkevari, indicated to international media that the new leader would be someone with the surname Khamenei. The Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, noted that Mojtaba Khamenei's election proceeded despite threats from US President Donald Trump to strike the Assembly's meeting.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has already pledged allegiance to Mojtaba Khamenei and declared its readiness to follow his directives.
Following Ali Khamenei's death, temporary governance of the republic was assumed by a leadership council. This council included President Masoud Pezeshkian, Head of Judiciary Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Eje'i, and a member of the Guardian Council, Alireza Arafi.
