President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has stated that the large-scale evacuation of citizens from the Middle East conflict zone was a significant test for the state and strengthened Kazakhstan's international standing. He reported that approximately 9,000 Kazakh nationals were swiftly evacuated from dangerous areas, emphasizing that the principle of "not abandoning our own" remains a cornerstone of state policy.
"Citizens of our country located in all regions of the planet know that they have the state – the Republic of Kazakhstan – behind them, always ready to come to their aid. Our tourists, pilgrims, and entrepreneurs who became unwitting hostages of the conflict in the Middle East recently saw this firsthand," said the Head of State at a forum for deputies of maslikhats at all levels.
The situation was indeed critical. Following the escalation, Tokayev sent personal messages to regional leaders expressing sincere support during difficult times. Telephone negotiations were also held with the leaders of Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.
Instructions were given to organize an urgent evacuation of compatriots, secure all vital facilities and critical infrastructure within Kazakhstan's territory, and place the Armed Forces and law enforcement agencies on combat duty.
A special headquarters was established at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with representatives from all relevant agencies. Airlines, tourism companies, and voluntary sponsors joined the effort. The headquarters worked around-the-clock to establish safe evacuation routes for citizens.
Evacuation from Iran proceeded overland through borders with Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkmenistan. Embassies maintained constant contact with citizens, providing all necessary assistance and consultations. As a result of this complex work, about 9 thousand people were promptly brought back to Kazakhstan from combat zones.
"Even in peacetime such measures require enormous organizational effort; against a backdrop of war their complexity and importance multiply many times over. It is no exaggeration to say that successfully passing such a stress test has strengthened Kazakhstan's authority on the international stage," said President Tokayev.
The President expressed gratitude to Middle Eastern leaders for organizing "green corridors" and thanked employees of government agencies, airlines, and everyone who assisted in evacuating compatriots.
Tokayev added that Kazakhstan never abandons its citizens wherever they are or whatever situation they face. He noted this was true during the pandemic when thousands were evacuated by special flights from various countries and in other critical situations abroad.
He stressed that within Kazakhstan during emergencies—industrial accidents, floods, fires—the state likewise does not leave people alone with difficulties but provides necessary assistance.
"Not abandoning our own is not a slogan or populism but a principle of our state policy. Therefore it is logical that this principle in an enhanced form is reflected in the draft new Constitution. It clearly states: 'The Republic of Kazakhstan guarantees protection to its citizens beyond its borders in accordance with law,'" emphasized President Tokayev.
The President concluded by stating all compatriots should know holders of Kazakhstan's turquoise passport are always under its protection; its power is defined by national strength and constructive energy.
