Shooting at Military Base, New COVID Strain, and Vet Gang Busted in Kazakhstan

A series of significant events unfolded across Kazakhstan on Wednesday, April 15th, ranging from a tragic military incident to public health advisories and major criminal cases.

In Pavlodar, a shooting occurred at a military unit. Preliminary reports indicate that a contract serviceman fired his service weapon. The shooter died at the scene, and another contract soldier was wounded. The injured man, born in 2001, was hospitalized in serious condition. A pre-trial investigation has been launched by the Ministry of Internal Affairs.

Health authorities are monitoring a new variant of COVID-19 known as BA.3.2 or informally as "Cicada," detected in over 30 countries. While scientists are studying its characteristics, the National Center for Public Health stated this variant has not been identified in Kazakhstan and is currently classified with low epidemiological significance.

In western Kazakhstan, law enforcement dismantled an organized criminal group involved in livestock theft. Notably, the group included veterinary doctors who allegedly stole farm animals over a long period and laundered them through official databases. All suspects have been detained.

Regarding political developments, Senate Speaker Maulen Ashimbayev commented on the potential introduction of a vice-president position. He stated the matter would be addressed after the formation of the new Parliament—the Kurultai—with elections scheduled for August this year.
