A deadly shooting spree and hostage crisis unfolded in Kyiv on Saturday, leaving at least six people dead and around ten others wounded. The attacker first opened fire on pedestrians in the city's Holosiivskyi district before storming a supermarket and taking hostages.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the casualties, noting that four individuals were rescued from the situation. Disturbing footage circulating on social media shows a man running through residential courtyards with an automatic weapon, firing at random passersby.

Ukrainian Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko identified the shooter as a 58-year-old man originally from Moscow who was a registered Ukrainian citizen. Preliminary information indicates he used automatic firearms. A fire also broke out simultaneously in the apartment where the attacker was officially registered.

The victims included a 30-year-old woman who succumbed to her wounds in the hospital, becoming the sixth fatality. Among the wounded was a four-year-old child, who was transported for medical care, and a supermarket security guard.

After negotiations failed, special police units stormed the supermarket where the gunman was holding hostages. "He took people hostage and opened fire on police officers during detention," stated Kyiv police. The assailant was ultimately neutralized after exchanging fire with law enforcement and likely detonating a grenade.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has classified the case as an act of terrorism. The gunman has been named by Ukrainian media as Dmytro Vasylchenko. Open-source investigations suggest he previously lived in Bakhmut, Donetsk region, and had financial ties to Russia. Unverified reports indicate he may have previously served as a lieutenant colonel in the Russian army, and social media accounts linked to him contained pro-war rhetoric against Ukraine and other extremist content.
