Direct negotiations between delegations from the United States and Iran have commenced in Islamabad, Pakistan. This marks the highest-level official interaction between the two nations since 1979.

The American delegation is led by Vice President JD Vance and includes White House Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. A White House representative stated that a full complement of U.S. Experts on relevant subjects is present in Islamabad, with additional support from Washington.

The Iranian side is headed by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi also participating. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar are attending the talks as mediators.

Despite the historic nature of the meeting, prospects for success are considered low. Both sides reportedly understand that the risk of failure could be a resumption of conflict, yet their visions for peace remain divergent.

Prior to the direct talks on Saturday, each delegation held separate meetings with Prime Minister Sharif. Iranian media reported that Tehran agreed to direct negotiations after progress in indirect talks and after receiving assurances from Israel regarding restraint in strikes on Beirut and southern Lebanon. The veracity of such an Israeli promise remains unclear.

Reports from Iranian press claiming the U.S. Agreed to unfreeze Iranian funds have been denied by an American official. The atmosphere remains tense, with sources in Tehran citing a deep distrust of the United States and highlighting a ceasefire in Lebanon as a paramount issue.
