A major train derailment occurred in Russia's Ulyanovsk region early Friday morning. Seven carriages of passenger train No. 302, traveling from Moscow to Chelyabinsk, left the tracks near the Bryandino station.
According to regional governor Alexey Russkikh, 35 people were injured in the accident. Eighteen of those injured required hospitalization, suffering from fractures and bruises. Medical personnel have assessed the condition of two individuals as serious, while the others sustained injuries of moderate or minor severity.
The train was carrying 412 passengers at the time of the derailment. Rail traffic on this section of the line has been suspended while authorities investigate and clear the scene.
Preliminary information from Russia's Investigative Committee points to poor technical condition of the railway track as the likely cause of the crash. Investigators have stated that fragments of the track have been seized and sent for forensic examination.
In response to the incident, a transport prosecutor's office has initiated a review of compliance with railway safety legislation. Concurrently, a criminal case has been opened by investigators into the circumstances surrounding the derailment.
