NATO Chief Rutte Acknowledges Trump's Disappointment After Meeting

Amid escalating tensions between the United States and its European allies, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has held a personal meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump in an effort to mend fences.
Following their discussion, Rutte publicly acknowledged that Trump remains "clearly disappointed" with the military alliance. This admission comes as part of a broader diplomatic push to address the former president's long-standing criticisms of NATO's structure and member contributions.
Trump reiterated his grievances shortly after the meeting, taking to social media to post: "NATO was not with us when we needed it, and it will not be if we need it again. Remember Greenland, that huge, poorly managed piece of ice." The post references a past diplomatic incident involving U.S. Interest in purchasing the autonomous Danish territory.
The former president's skepticism is not new. Last week, he told reporters he was "reconsidering" America's role within the alliance. On previous occasions, Trump has labeled NATO a "paper tiger," asserting that Russia does not fear the organization.
These tensions are set against a backdrop of recent operational disagreements. Several NATO member states reportedly declined to allow U.S. Aircraft involved in conflicts with Iran to use their bases or to deploy ships to the Strait of Hormuz.
While a formal U.S. Withdrawal from NATO would require a two-thirds Senate vote or an act of Congress, analysts suggest a returning President Trump could significantly undermine the alliance through other means. Potential actions include slashing U.S. Funding for NATO operations, reducing American troop levels in Europe, or halting intelligence sharing with Ukraine amid its war with Russia.
