Spanish PM Sanchez: Middle East Conflict Worse Than 2003 Iraq Invasion

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has delivered a stark assessment to the national parliament, declaring that the current conflict in the Middle East represents a far more severe scenario than the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq.
"We are not facing the same scenario; we are in something much worse, with much broader and deeper potential consequences," Sanchez stated during his parliamentary address.
In a sharply critical speech, he listed what he described as the devastating repercussions of the ongoing war. "They have managed to undermine international legality, destabilize the Middle East, reignite conflicts in Iraq and Lebanon, bury Gaza under the rubble of oblivion and indifference, encourage nuclear programs in Pakistan and North Korea, create insecurity in Persian Gulf countries, give Putin more than 8.8 billion euros to finance his war, worsen energy difficulties, and in Iran swap one Khamenei for an even worse Khamenei because Mojtaba is as much a dictator and even more bloodthirsty than his father. In short, it is an unprecedented catastrophe," Sanchez said.
The Prime Minister openly questioned the utility of military offensives and criticized US President Donald Trump's actions. "We must all ask ourselves: what is all this destruction for?" he posed to lawmakers.
Sanchez also championed a more assertive and independent role for Spain on the global stage. "That Spain which sat quietly in the back seat no longer exists. Now we have a voice and a vote, and we are going to use it for the benefit of Spain's common interests and those of all humanity," he declared.
"Being an ally does not mean blindly following partners."
The head of government warned about the conflict's price tag and refused to accept its consequences. "This war is a huge mistake whose costs we do not accept nor wish to pay," Sanchez asserted.
He further emphasized Spain's stance by stating clearly: "Spain will not be an accomplice to illegal aggression or lies disguised as freedom. Not this time, nor while I am head of government."
With this speech, Sanchez reinforced his government's position advocating for adherence to international law while warning of escalation risks that could lead to even graver global repercussions.
