Investigators have expanded the charges against Sultan Sarsemaliyev, the main suspect in the murder of the Karabalin family in the village of Zhangeldin. In addition to the charge of murdering two or more persons, his actions are now also classified as "murder committed repeatedly."

The list of charges against Sarsemaliyev now includes not only Part 1 (murder of two or more persons) but also Part 13, Article 99 of the Criminal Code. The case also involves other crimes: theft committed by a group of persons by prior conspiracy and fraud. According to prosecutors, these episodes are related to the theft of personal belongings from the victims and the illegal sale of their livestock.

Lawyers explain a key nuance in the legal qualification. "The Criminal Code provides for two different qualifying features: 'murder of two or more persons' and 'murder committed repeatedly.' In the first case, it is about killing several people at once within one event; in the second, it is about taking lives at different times and under different circumstances," noted lawyer Abzal Kasymzhanov.

Kasymzhanov believes that given the high-profile nature of the case and the suspect's attempt to flee abroad, there is a high probability that the court will resort to the most severe punishment. "Also, considering established judicial practice, most likely, life imprisonment will be imposed on the suspect," he stated.

In addition to murder, Sultan Sarsemaliyev is charged with theft and fraud. Lawyer Samat Abuev explained how these episodes will affect the final sentence. According to him, punishment will be assigned for multiple crimes by absorbing a less severe punishment with a more severe one.

The case concerns a mass murder in Atyrau Region. At the end of December 2025, relatives reported four family members missing: pensioners Maksot Karabalin (66) and Nasip Uteshkalieva (64), their daughter Miramgul Karabalina (35), and son Nauryz Mukangaliyev (32).

On January 6, bodies identified as those of Maksot Karabalin and Nasip Uteshkalieva were discovered buried under an outbuilding on their property in Zhangeldin village.

On January 8, police named 29-year-old Sultan Sarsemaliyev—the family's son-in-law—as a key suspect after he left Kazakhstan with his wife Akbayan Mukangaliyeva (the younger daughter). An international arrest warrant was issued for him.

Sarsemaliyev and Mukangaliyeva were detained on February 24 at a guesthouse in Senaru village in Indonesia. On February 25, Deputy Minister Sanjar Adilov announced that Akbayan Mukangaliyeva was also recognized as a suspect.

On March 9 evening it became known that after extradition to Almaty Sarsemaliyev confessed to killing Nauryz Mukangaliyev and Miramgul Karabalina revealing where they were buried—in Geolog microdistrict near Atyrau under yard soil at house previously rented by him; both were buried next their parents March11th following discovery earlier same day according relative who described them simple kind people always ready share what had never harmed anyone while noting immense grief for whole family currently unable comment further due pain loss experienced recently still fresh mind heart alike all involved parties concerned directly indirectly through media coverage etcetera...
