A fragile two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran is under severe strain, with both sides accusing the other of violations and issuing stark warnings. The core dispute centers on whether the truce applies to Lebanon, where Israeli airstrikes have reportedly killed 254 people since the agreement was announced.

Iran's chief negotiator, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, declared that negotiations are now "inappropriate." He accused the United States of violating three key points of Iran's 10-point proposal before talks could even begin. These alleged breaches include the failure to halt fighting in Lebanon, an incursion by a drone into Iranian airspace, and denying Iran's right to uranium enrichment.

"The very 'effective basis for negotiations' has been openly and unambiguously violated even before they started," Ghalibaf stated. "In such a situation, a bilateral ceasefire or negotiations are inappropriate."

In contrast, U.S. Vice President JD Vance framed the conflict as a "misunderstanding." Speaking in Budapest, he asserted that the ceasefire was never intended to cover Lebanon. "We never gave such a promise," Vance emphasized. "We said the ceasefire would be focused on Iran and America's allies—both Israel and the Arab states of the Persian Gulf."

Vance issued a direct ultimatum to Tehran, warning that Iran must "take the next step" or face a potential resumption of hostilities. He explicitly linked Washington's compliance with the deal to Iran reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which remains closed to shipping.

The diplomatic chasm is wide. While Israel and the U.S. Maintain that strikes in Lebanon will continue, Iran has threatened to abandon the ceasefire entirely if they do not stop. A White House spokesperson announced U.S.-Iran talks scheduled for April 11th in Islamabad, but with such contradictory agendas, it is unclear if the truce will hold until then.

Further complicating matters are conflicting reports on Iran's nuclear program. The U.S. Claims Iran agreed to halt weapons-grade uranium enrichment and transfer its existing stockpiles. However, an Iranian entity stated it is permitted to continue enrichment under the ceasefire terms.

Although both nations have claimed victory after a five-week war that cost thousands of lives, their fundamental disagreements over a lasting settlement for the Middle East remain profoundly unresolved.
