Eurasian Union Adopts Unified Truck Weight and Dimension Standards
The President of Kazakhstan has signed a decree ratifying the Agreement on permissible masses, axle loads, and dimensions of vehicles traveling on the road networks of Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) member states along designated Eurasian transport corridors. This landmark agreement, originally signed in Moscow on December 13, 2024, establishes uniform technical regulations for freight transport across the union.
The core objective of the document is to harmonize vehicle parameter requirements throughout the EAEU. Its implementation is designed to eliminate existing operational barriers stemming from differing national limits on maximum permissible weights, axle loads, and vehicle sizes. This harmonization will create equal and transparent conditions for international road carriers operating across member states.
The Agreement pursues several key strategic goals: unlocking the EAEU's transit potential more effectively; boosting the efficiency of international road freight along Eurasian corridors; ensuring the preservation of road infrastructure; enhancing traffic safety; and improving the overall quality of transport services.
From a practical standpoint, the new rules introduce increased permissible loads per axle. For instance, while current regulations generally cap a single axle at 10 tons regardless of tire configuration, the new standards differentiate based on wheel type. The limit for axles with single tires (mono-wheel) is set at 10.5 tons, while axles with dual tires (twin-wheel) are permitted up to 11.5 tons.
Furthermore, permissible values for groups of closely spaced axles will also be revised upward, with specific thresholds varying according to the number of axles in the group and their tire configuration.
The presidential decree provides the legal foundation for implementing these changes. Officials anticipate that this regulatory alignment will spur further development of transit traffic and strengthen Kazakhstan's position as a key regional transport and logistics hub.
