NASA has halted preparations for the historic Artemis 2 mission, delaying the planned lunar flyby of four astronauts due to technical issues with its Space Launch System rocket.

Inspections revealed a fault in the helium supply system for the rocket's interim cryogenic propulsion stage. To address the problem, the rocket will be returned to the Vehicle Assembly Building, making a launch previously targeted for March 2026 impossible. A new launch date has not been set.

The Artemis 2 mission is the second phase of the ambitious U.S. lunar program. The crew is slated for a ten-day journey to orbit the Moon and return safely to Earth.

The Artemis program, officially announced in 2019, aims to return American astronauts to the lunar surface, establish regular crewed missions, and create a foothold for future expeditions to Mars. Its first phase, an uncrewed test flight of the Orion spacecraft, concluded successfully in December 2022.

The next key milestone is the Artemis 3 mission, which plans to achieve the first human landing on the Moon in over half a century.
