Law enforcement agencies in Kazakhstan have reported a disturbing new trend in drug trafficking: the increasing involvement of close relatives in criminal schemes. In a series of recent operations, police have dismantled several so-called "family businesses" involved in the production and distribution of narcotics.

In Almaty, authorities intercepted a vehicle where two brothers were transporting approximately one kilogram of the synthetic drug alpha-PVP. The older brother, who had a prior criminal record, was found to have recruited his younger sibling into the illegal activity. During the arrest, police also confiscated a sawn-off shotgun and ammunition.

A separate operation in the Almaty region led to the discovery of an indoor cannabis farm run by two brothers born in 1996 and 1998. The pair had set up a sophisticated growing operation in a rented house, cultivating marijuana on an especially large scale for future sale. Officers seized 102 pots containing cannabis plants with a total weight of 61 kilograms, along with specialized equipment including LED grow lights and ventilation systems.

In another case from Almaty, a man exploited his sister's trust by using her apartment to package drugs for distribution as a "drug courier." Upon his detention, police found over 100 zip-lock bags and about 500 grams of mephedrone at the location.

Over just ten days in April, nearly one ton of narcotics was removed from illegal circulation nationwide. Of this total, more than 800 kilograms consisted of synthetic drugs.

All suspects involved in these cases have been placed in temporary detention facilities. Pre-trial investigations are underway under Part 3 of Article 297 of Kazakhstan's Criminal Code. This article carries severe penalties, including imprisonment for up to 12 years with confiscation of property.

A senior official from the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MVD) emphasized that combating drug crime remains a top priority. "Any attempts to establish production and distribution channels for narcotics will be suppressed harshly and uncompromisingly," stated Kuandyk Alzhanov, Deputy Chairman of the MVD's Committee for Countering Drug Crime. He confirmed that operational work in this area is ongoing.
