German Chancellor Urges China's Xi to Influence Russia for Ukraine Peace

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has publicly called on Chinese leader Xi Jinping to use Beijing's influence over Moscow to help end the war in Ukraine. The appeal was made during a meeting between the two leaders in China.

"We know that signals from Beijing are taken very seriously in Moscow—this applies to both words and deeds," Scholz stated following the talks, emphasizing the unique leverage China holds with Russia.

According to reports, Xi Jinping responded by affirming China's support for a diplomatic resolution to what he termed the "conflict in Ukraine." However, he stressed that any settlement must "take into account the legitimate interests of all parties" and ensure their equal participation in the process.

The German Chancellor did not elaborate on Xi's specific reaction to his direct request for intervention. Scholz is currently on an official visit to China, during which he has also encouraged increased Chinese investment in Germany.
