German Chancellor Urges China to Use Its Influence on Russia for Ukraine Peace

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to leverage Beijing's influence over Moscow to help achieve a peaceful settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. The appeal was made during a meeting between the two leaders in China.

Following their talks, Scholz emphasized the significant weight that signals from Beijing carry in Moscow. "We know that signals from Beijing are taken very seriously in Moscow—this applies to both words and deeds," the German Chancellor stated.

He did not provide details on Xi Jinping's specific reaction to this request. However, according to reports from Chinese state media, President Xi told Scholz that China supports resolving the "Ukraine conflict" through diplomacy. He added that any settlement must "take into account the legitimate interests of all parties" and ensure their equal participation in the process.

The discussions on Ukraine took place during Chancellor Scholz's official visit to China, where he also encouraged increased Chinese investment in Germany.
