Macron Hails US Supreme Court Ruling on Trump Tariffs as a Victory for Law

French President Emmanuel Macron has welcomed a U.S. Supreme Court ruling that struck down former President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs, framing it as a victory for the rule of law and democratic checks and balances.
Macron made the comments while opening the International Agricultural Show in Paris. He stated that the court's decision to find the tariffs unconstitutional was something to be applauded.
"For those who think Supreme Courts are problems in real life. The Supreme Court looked at the Constitution and ruled that it did not comply with it," Macron said.
The French leader added that Paris will carefully study the consequences of a new 10 percent global tariff announced by Trump following the court's ruling and will take appropriate measures. France remains keen to continue exporting its goods to the United States.
Macron emphasized that trade relations must be mutually beneficial and stable, avoiding unilateral steps. Key French exports include agricultural products, luxury goods, fashion, and aerospace equipment.
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Trump's expansive global tariffs illegal on February 20. A majority of justices found the former president overstepped his authority by using a national emergency law to impose them.
Trump called the Supreme Court decision a "disgrace" and announced a backup plan, signing an executive order the same day for an additional 10 percent duty "for all countries."
