On the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations issued a joint statement pledging continued and steadfast support for Kyiv. The declaration, published on Tuesday, February 24, commits to assisting Ukraine in "defending its territorial integrity and right to exist, as well as its freedom, sovereignty and independence."

The statement highlights Europe's leading role in this effort, joined by other international partners. It also expresses support for ongoing peace initiatives and efforts to facilitate direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

The G7 leaders emphasized that "only Ukraine and Russia" can reach an agreement to end the war through direct talks. They reaffirmed their commitments to provide Ukraine with "reliable and credible security guarantees" under the framework of the "Coalition of the Willing."

Amid intensified attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure this winter, the statement welcomed efforts to support the country during this challenging period. A significant portion of the declaration focused on nuclear safety cooperation.

The leaders pledged to work closely with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and Ukraine to raise funds for restoring the protective shelter over the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. The goal is to prevent any radiological incidents that could have severe humanitarian and environmental consequences across the continent.

The document also expressed support for initiatives aimed at ensuring the "immediate, safe and unconditional return" of Ukrainian children. This marks the first joint G7 statement since Donald Trump returned to the White House over a year ago.
