The US dollar exchange rate in Kazakhstan experienced a significant jump on Monday, April 8. According to the results of daytime trading on the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE), the weighted average dollar rate rose by 12.32 tenge, settling at 475.31 tenge per dollar.

This surge in the exchange market contrasts with the official rate set by the National Bank of Kazakhstan for April 8, which stands at 460.37 tenge per dollar.

The sharp increase followed reports of a truce between the United States and Iran. In response to this geopolitical development, currency exchange points in major cities adjusted their rates upward. In Almaty, the average purchase rate reached 476.54 tenge, while the selling rate was set at 479.42 tenge. In Astana, dollars were bought at an average of 472.96 tenge and sold for up to 480.00 tenge.

The trigger for these financial movements was an announcement from US President Donald Trump, who stated that Washington agreed to suspend strikes against Iran for two weeks following a ten-point proposal from Tehran, which he described as a "working basis for negotiations." Iran, in turn, expressed readiness to ensure the opening of the Strait of Hormuz for the duration of this two-week ceasefire.

This diplomatic shift had an immediate and dramatic impact on global oil prices. After trading between $107 and $110 per barrel throughout April 7, Brent crude futures began a sharp decline after midnight, plummeting to around $93-94 per barrel on the ICE London exchange. The price of West Texas Intermediate (WTI) oil fell by more than 15 percent, also dropping to approximately $94 per barrel.
