Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío has stated that the country's armed forces are actively preparing for the possibility of a military invasion by the United States. He described any failure to take such defensive measures as naive, given current global events.

"Our armed forces are always ready, and in fact, they are currently preparing for the possibility of military aggression," de Cossío said. Despite these preparations, he emphasized Havana's hope for a peaceful resolution to its issues with Washington, adding, "We see no reason why this should happen and find no justification for it."

The official also addressed the severe fuel blockade affecting Cuba, calling it a result of US aggression against the island. He expressed hope that fuel would reach Cuba and that this US-led boycott would not last forever. "The situation is very serious, and we are acting as actively as possible to deal with it," he noted.

These statements follow earlier remarks by former US President Donald Trump, who suggested in March that "big changes" were coming for Cuba after military operations in Iran and that the Cuban government would "soon fall."

In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel confirmed in March that negotiations had taken place with the Trump administration. Following these talks, Díaz-Canel accused the US of almost daily threats to overthrow the Cuban government by force.

Reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated that the US administration aimed to facilitate a change of power in Cuba by the end of 2026. However, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has dismissed claims of a US desire to oust Díaz-Canel as false information.
