North Korean state media has announced the successful ground test of an upgraded rocket engine designed for missiles it claims can strike targets within the United States. The test was reportedly observed by leader Kim Jong Un, who hailed the development as a "significant achievement" that strengthens his country's strategic military arsenal.

The Korean Central News Agency stated that the new engine, which uses a composite carbon material, generates a maximum thrust of 2,500 kilonewtons. This represents an increase from the 1,970 kilonewtons reported during a similar test of a solid-fuel engine in September of last year.

While Pyongyang's stated goal is to develop more maneuverable missiles that are harder for the US and its allies to intercept, some experts caution that claims about an engine enabling such long-range strikes may be exaggerated. However, missiles with built-in solid-fuel engines are generally easier to transport and conceal at launch than their liquid-fuel counterparts.

The announcement comes amid heightened tensions on the Korean peninsula. North Korea recently declared South Korea its "most hostile state," vowing to completely ignore Seoul and warning of "merciless" consequences for any provocative actions.
