Major General Anita Asma, the Force Commander of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), has presented United Nations medals to 139 Kazakh military personnel serving in the peacekeeping mission.
The independent Kazakh peacekeeping contingent is deployed at the Faouar base on the Golan Heights in the Syrian Arab Republic. Their primary mission is to support the ceasefire regime as part of UNDOF.
Kazakh peacekeepers are responsible for securing and fortifying UN positions, engaging with local communities, and performing a wide range of duties to maintain stability within their area of operations.
"The contingent's personnel demonstrate a high level of professionalism, coordination, and operational efficiency," said Lieutenant Colonel Zhanibek Nurganov, commander of the peacekeeping company. "The UN medal is a recognition of each soldier's courage, discipline, and dedication to duty, as well as their contribution to maintaining peace in the mission's area."
Since April 2025 alone, members of the contingent have conducted 55 operational tasks. During these missions, they have neutralized over 1,200 explosive ordnance items and more than 50 improvised explosive devices (IEDs). In total, since its deployment began, this second rotation of Kazakh peacekeepers has completed 675 tasks.
Kazakhstan first deployed an independent peacekeeping contingent to the Golan Heights in March 2024.
